A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Written for a wedding, this most ingenious of Shakespeare’s comedies, ‘the original and best rom-com’, has delighted audiences for centuries in every conceivable kind of performance setting. As theatre, as ballet, as orchestral score, as film, as performance art, it delivers time after time as one of the world’s most magical and enduring love stories. ‘The path of true love never runs smooth’ is, perhaps, its most famous line and the action of the play could be summed up in that legendary pronouncement.
But there is another love story at work here too; that is our love affair with the world of the imagination and particularly with theatre itself. The fabulous mechanicals am-dram society led by the outrageous Nick Bottom, provides us with as loving a portrait of the innocent joy of acting as anyone is ever likely to encounter.
Now third year drama students at CITCSM are bringing the energy of youth and the full range of their fast-developing performance skills to bear on the classic comedy. Under Johnny Hanrahan’s direction, they are creating a contemporary production that sets the action in a pop-art universe and draws on the new design possibilities offered by video maker, Cormac O’Connor to place the traditional story in a thoroughly modern frame. Live film, fluid video images and a specially-composed sound score give a sharp modern edge to a production that embraces the astonishing poetry of the piece while using it as a springboard for a theatrical experience that is in every sense a dream.
