This is a Transition Year Work Experience Week, with project ensembles and professional seminars. In 2018 over 130 young musicians from 25 counties came together for a fabulous week of music making. There is no charge for this course and all materials will be provided. It will take place in the CIT Cork School of Music in Cork City centre from Mon 1 April to Fri 5 April 2019. It has a number of different strands:
The Transition Year Project Orchestra
Into its third year, this has been very successful with a full Symphony Orchestra of approximately eighty preparing and performing a programme of orchestral standards such as Finlandia, Force of Destiny, and Dvorak's Slavonic Dance under the direction of young professional conductor Conor Palliser.
Applicants should have some orchestral or band experience and should be comfortable reading music of at least grade five standard. We are not fussy about grade exam results but enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and improve are vital! If orchestral sections are oversubscribed we may conduct assessments over skype or facetime. This was not necessary this year and everyone who applied was accommodated.
The week's activities will include:
- Daily group rehearsals with a professional conductor
- Sectional rehearsals with experienced orchestral professionals
- Observation opportunities with other CSM ensembles
- Final lunchtime concert in aid of local charities
Traditional Music Ensemble
Under the stewardship of Johnny McCarthy & Ciara O'Leary-Fitzpatrick, some of the best young Traditional musicians from all corners of Ireland form an ensemble that prepares a lunchtime concert and studies a broad range of styles.
Popular Music Ensembles
An innovation this coming year will be our Popular Music Ensembles. Applicants will be grouped into balanced pop ensembles and study a range of popular music styles leading to a final concert. We can only accept players of: electric guitar, electric bass, pop keyboards or piano, drumkit; and pop vocalists. There may have to be auditions in certain areas.
Please note that this is not a chaperoned residential course. participants are required to attend at CIT Cork School of Music in Cork city centre from 10:00 to 15:30 from Monday 1 April 2019 to 14:30 Friday 5 April 2019. Accomodation, where necessary, can be recommended but will not be co-ordinated or supervised by CSM.
