Musicianship & Kindermusic Lecturer
Edel McDonnell (MA, BA (Hons), LRSM, DipMus RIAM)
Edel is a graduate of Waterford Institute of Technology, the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the CIT Cork School of Music. She has been a prize-winner at the Dublin Feis Ceoil and at the CIT Cork School of Music, where she was awarded the Bernard Curtis Prize for piano.
Edel is dedicated, motivated and committed to undergoing continuous professional development. She obtained a Professional Development Certificate in Early Childhood Music (Kodály) with the British Kodály Academy/University of Roehampton, UK, a Certificate in Kodály Music Education Concept from Silver Lake College, USA and the Feierabend Association for Music Education Curriculum Certification (First Steps of Music and Conversational Solfege - 1, 2 & Upper Levels) at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, USA. She also completed an early childhood music & movement teacher training programme based on the Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy in Los Angeles, California, USA. As a graduate music student in the USA, Edel was awarded multiple scholarships from Silver Lake College.
Edel has devised, taught and presented workshops and lectures in schools and colleges including University College Dublin, Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin, Leeson Park School of Music, Dublin, Herbert Lodge Arts Centre, Kildare, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, CIT Cork School of Music, Cork College of Commerce and the County Cork School of Music. Edel was appointed a music examiner for the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin and the County Cork School of Music. She has lectured on the BA in Early Childhood Education degree course in Dublin Institute of Technology and on the BA in Early Years Education degree course in Cork Institute of Technology. Most recently Edel has served as a teaching assistant on the “Music Education in Contemporary Context” module at the Department of Music, University College Cork.
At present, Edel lectures in the Musicianship and Academic Studies Department at the CIT Cork School of Music and for the Department of Applied Social Studies in CIT. Edel has been responsible for designing, developing and implementing many courses and modules throughout CIT including Kinder music and the Music Beginners Junior Infants 8-year Musicianship programme for children. Edel also tutors with Music Generation Cork City in partnership with Cork Institute of Technology.
In addition to her duties with Cork Institute of Technology, Edel is the founder and director of Early Years Music Cork (EYM Cork), a music education programme for young children (infancy toward and beyond the preschool years). EYM Cork provides training for early childhood teachers who wish to incorporate music into their childcare settings. EYM Cork is committed to promoting excellence in early childhood music. Edel is currently a PhD student at the Department of Music, University College Cork. Her doctoral research is partially funded by Cork Institute of Technology and focuses on early childhood music education in Ireland.
