Programme Overview

MTU Cork School of Music offers Masters degrees by Research in the areas of musicology, music education, and music technology.

Course Structure

  • The programme earns 120 ECT credits and a Level 9 qualification.
  • Studies take 21 months full-time (minimum) to complete or 42 months part-time.
  • The award is based on evaluation of a thesis written on the basis of the research.
  • Candidates will normally be required to give presentations on aspects of their ongoing research at intervals over the duration of the research programme.

Scholarships

  • The Faculty of Business and Humanities offers two scholarships (full-fees paid) for two years for full-time Music Research. The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

Entry Requirements and Applications

  • Entry requirement is a 2nd class honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8). Applicants should have gained at least a BMus degree or BA with Music as the major subject, or equivalent degree in a related discipline (requires mastery of the subject matter).
  • Any application to become a postgraduate researcher (Masters) requires the support of a qualified supervisor, and your first task is to discuss your interests with a supervisor and develop a research plan. In most cases, the applicant plays a key role in developing this plan.
  • When this process has been completed, and following formal approval of the research proposal, candidates are admitted to the MTU research register.
