A message from the Head of School

Welcome to the 2021-22 CSM Academic Year!

At the MTU Cork School of Music, our passion isn't limited to making music and drama;
our passion is ultimately community. As I look back on the past 18 months, I am heartened by the strength and resilience of our community. At its core, MTU Cork School of Music is composed of exceptional individuals, all of whom work powerfully towards a shared mission and vision - succeeding together through high quality, holistic and inclusive performing arts education. Despite the academic and logistical challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, our staff continued to put the education and welfare of students to the fore. Our students adapted, innovated and created excellent work in challenging circumstances, simultaneously gaining new, industry-relevant skills. Newly emerging academic activities and innovative performance platforms such as our online performing arts festival Live@UnionQuay will continue to enhance and enrich the student experience into the future.

As we embark on the 2021-2022 CSM Academic Year, we are hopeful that we will be able to return to a more traditional in-person experience, albeit with continuing precautions. We are optimistic that we will continue to navigate the pandemic safely by collectively following health and safety procedures. Risk assessments for the spaces and activities continue to be updated, directional systems remain in place, and sanitisation units are still in use around the building. As per current government guidelines, the wearing of face masks is mandatory, and washing and sanitising hands should be undertaken frequently. Our success in minimising risk depends on our collective willingness to observe the health and safety procedures, which will be updated according to Government guidelines. A return to live, in-person performance is finally within reach; something that we have hungered for since March 2020. We are all in this together.

I hope that you are looking forward to a rewarding and fulfilling year as a student, parent or staff member and that you will avail of many of the opportunities open to you as a member of the MTU Cork School of Music community. We, at the CSM, pride ourselves on the holistic nature of our music and drama education, spanning five levels of education, which places us amongst leading conservatoires nationally and internationally. CSM has more than 450 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in BMus, BA in Popular Music, BA in Theatre and Drama Studies, BA in Musical Theatre, MA in Music, MA & MSc in Music Technology, MA by Research and PhD by Research programmes. We are proud to also have our Inclusive Music Ensemble commencing this year. This accredited programme of study offers modules at Level 8, Level 6, and Level 3/4 and learners will have the opportunity to participate in music-making using music technology in an inclusive space. There are over 3,000 enrolments for the part-time Conservatoire provision of the School, with all students benefitting from the dynamic learning and teaching environment offered at CSM.

Due to the uncertainties created by the ongoing global health crisis, this year’s Information Booklet does not provide the usual comprehensive details regarding the projected activities of the School going forward. Our website and social media pages, however, will be updated regularly to keep you informed. Some events will be livestreamed in lieu of in-person performances and these events can be viewed on our website (csm.mtu.ie). You can also visit our Facebook (@MTUCorkSchoolofMusic), Instagram (@mtu_csm) and Twitter (@mtu_csm) pages for further information and updates.

I am eager to begin my work as Head of MTU Cork School of Music to help us realise our highest aspirations as a world-class centre of performing arts education. Our staff, students, alumni, donors, friends, loyal audiences and the greater MTU community will ensure that the future of the MTU Cork School of Music is very bright.

Best wishes for a safe, successful and enjoyable year at CSM.
